BIODIVERSITY TRAIL
This September, Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky (TMMK), and our partner, Bluegrass Greensource, are hosting three community science events focused on monarch butterfly migration.
Participants will learn about monarch biology, habitat conservation, and the importance of community science while helping collect valuable data for migration research. With guidance from trained staff and volunteers, participants will safely capture, identify, tag, record, and release monarch butterflies following established Monarch Watch protocols.
Monarch Tagging Opportunities
Because butterfly handling must be conducted carefully, space is limited. Advance registration is required for the public events.

Behold the Monarch!
Monarch butterflies migrate thousands of miles across North America each year, traveling south to Mexico in the fall. Along the way, they pollinate flowering plants and depend on healthy habitats for food and shelter.
Because monarchs are sensitive to habitat loss, pesticide exposure, and climate change, scientists study them as an indicator species—a species whose health can provide clues about the condition of the broader ecosystem. Monarch research helps guide conservation efforts and reveals environmental changes that may affect other plants, animals, and people.
